Re: Leaking Rear main Seal

Thanks for all the info Dave. Certainly given me something to think about. Would love to hear from anyone else out there who has had problems with newly fitted rear seals in a stock LA 318. I don't want to go out and buy a VW T4 but I might be forced to if I cant fix this within the next 4 weeks (Fe...

Leaking Rear main Seal

Had my 318 rebuilt last month. The crank didnt need replacing but I was told that there was some slight corrosion where the rear main seal goes. I was warned that this might result in a very slight oil leak but that this might be compensated for by using a new rubber seal rather than the rope seal t...

Re: Foreign objects in Sump

Crank end float within tolerance. No grey paste stuff anywhere.

If it was big end shells, wouldn’t I have noises and maybe low oil pressure?

Foreign objects in Sump

IMG_4231.JPG Hi All. Recently dropped the sump off my 318 (1968) to discover these bits of metal. last time I had the sump off was 15 years ago - they could have been in there for years or just a few months. A magnet wont pick them up so I am assuming it is some sort of alloy. They are very thin (0...

Where to buy a torque converter?

Hi Guys. Might need to replace a torque converter on a standard 318 with a 727 box. Not sure whether to go for a refurbished one or a new one. Any thoughts on this and where to buy such a thing would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks - Terry

Re: Leaking 727

Box came out for the second time. On inspection, the oil seal was ok but there was play in the metal bush in the oil pump. Apparently this can sometimes cause problems when worn. I replaced the bush and fitted a new oil seal together with the two outer gaskets of the pump housing. Then put the gear ...

Re: Leaking 727

Thanks Blue. From memory, the whole area was damp. I am about to take the box out again (β€˜m too old for this!) and will inspect it all a bit more carefully. πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™

Re: Leaking 727

Just to add to the info above. When ordering a new oil seal from a parts person, he advised that I should replace the oil pump bushing, which is just behind the oil seal (I think). If this was worn, would it really cause the oil seal to leak? The gearbox was overhauled by Blue 30,000 miles ago (2006...

Leaking 727

Hi Guys Had an oil leak on the bottom of the bell housing. The fluid level was correct ie. not overfilled, so ended up taking the box out and replacing the oil seal. Reassembled everything and took it for a road test - it was still leaking. Am I right in thinking that there are only two places that ...

Head Gaskets

Recently fitted on a standard 318, some Fel-pro head gaskets. Do they have to be re-torqued after a certain mileage or is it fit and forget?

Hi All
Back on the forum again after a bit of an absence. Still got the A108 Xplorer (25 years on and still fixing it!) Also own the white pop top which is in the garage in the photo. The other vans are part of the Cronin family and are just visiting. :) :) :)
