Re: a bit of this and a bit of that
well final assembly was almost without incident, the wheels had a couple of 'high' spots on the welds that hold the centre to the rim. a little buzz with a flap wheel and a sniff of rattle can black soon sorted that though. that showed how tight it was to fit 300mm discs and 4 pot calipers all ...

Re: a bit of this and a bit of that
the cap head 12.9 bolts arrived this morning. we drilled the new brackets to suit and mocked it all up for the last time. we had to add a 5mm wheel spacer behind the disc to align the caliper with the bracket but that was the only thing required to marry it all together. last job today was to break ...

Re: a bit of this and a bit of that
the new 300mm discs arrived today and they are just what the doctor ordered. with the pads at the edge of the disc the caliper has plenty of room inside the wheel now. next we moved to cad work and before long we had a template to transfer to 10mm steel plate. they're now cut and drilled to bolt to ...

Re: a bit of this and a bit of that
2 steps forward and one step back, lol. with the built up caliper slipped over the disc we offered a wheel onto the hub. due to the shape of the smoothie wheels the casting of the caliper touched the wheel near the middle. if you wiggled the wheel it pushed the caliper out roughly 5-6mm and then ...

Re: a bit of this and a bit of that
today the brake pads finally arrived so we could get on with the caliper brackets. first we had to make 4 x 2mm shims the same shape as the pads, this is because the bmw discs are 4mm thinner than the subaru ones. yes the pistons would've pumped out to take up the gap but...... would they be too far ...

Re: a bit of this and a bit of that
the calipers arrived today, we just need the pads so we can offer them in position over the discs to make the mounting brackets.

Re: 318 Core plug problem
you could struggle and replace the 2 you can see that are gone. but if 2 are gone that bad it's a fair bet the others aren't far behind, including ones you can't see or change in situ. on the block there's 3 each side, 2 at the front and 2 at the rear. plus 1 each end of the cylinder heads. looking ...

Re: a bit of this and a bit of that
today we got on well. the wolseley axle got clamped in the workmate and the drum brakes were stripped off. the bmw discs arrived (same jag/chevy pcd as the wolseley) so we chucked the hubs into the lathe to turn them down to match the discs centre bore. they're bolted together now and refitted to ...

Re: a bit of this and a bit of that
less than 3 days from ordering it my clutch kit arrived from rock auto! boy they're fast :D
we ran out of time this week to fire up my engine so it'll be rolled into the corner for now..... to be continued, lol.
we now have a beam axle from a 'vintage' wolseley here for a disc brake conversion ...

Re: a bit of this and a bit of that
a little bit more done today. we made up battery leads, fitted the new starter, charge warning light and made an adapter for the oil pressure sender. when you short across the solenoid the engine spins nice and fast so that's good. more soon.

Re: '58 (nash) rambler american family project
i just followed up on a previous post re the clutch. i ended up ordering a full clutch kit so i could upgrade to a diaphram style pressure plate. these tend to give a lighter feel at the pedal than the stock 3 finger type. the kit from rock auto with shipping, uk duties and taxes was only ?165 so a ...
