early 273 have different angle on the inlet manifold bolts so inlet manifolds don't interchange unless you machine the bolt holes all cranks and rods are the same for the 273, 318 and the 340 but not the 360. early 318 and 340 cranks are internally balanced. Its the same with the auto box there are three different boxes one for the six pot, one for the small block and one for the big block. although the six pot and small block 904 auto boxes are basically the same as are the 727 auto box for the big block and small block.

When I did my city and guilds in automatics in 1974 I was told to use petroleum jelly (Vaseline) and only use paraffin as these are all made basically from the same thing and will mix together . I have been building then since the early 1970s and never had a problem all cheep and easy to get hold of
