Re: 1971 Hemi Road Runner
First things first we needed a 440 engine so a few phone calls were made
and it turned out that Tony at Marshall Dickson Performance in Kent had a disassembled standard bore 440 short motor which we bought for £325 (those were the days). I already had some good cylinder heads and a cast iron six pack manifold so we were good to go. The rest of the parts required were taken off the blown up 383 motor. We bought new six pack carbs, linkage, fuel lines and an air cleaner assembly from Koller Dodge in the US along with a Performance cam, lifters and valve springs.I then set about building the engine. The bodywork on the 383 car was remarkably solid and the orange paintwork was actually in really good order but it was all stripped down ready to be painted Ford Raven Black as requested by Francis. Obviously all this work took place over many months as we wanted to put together a really good car. The interior had been redone in the States to a high standard and the seats had been recovered in an unusual orange and black style obviously to match the previous Hemi orange exterior. Francis rather liked the interior as it was, which was a relief but he did request we fit a rev counter mounted to the steering column. We sourced a set of polished Centreline wheels and had new BF Goodrich tyres fitted, we also fitted air shocks at the rear to raise the back end slightly. As you can imagine this all took some considerable time and money but the end result was a really well sorted car that owed well over ten thousand pounds all in. While all this went on the Hemi Road Runner sat untouched in a lock up waiting for the swap to take place.
And this is where it all started to go wrong !

Looks like an amazing car. I'm not keen on the interior and think a black interior would have been killer but obviously owners choice. Great story and nothing like leaving us hanging on the edge...can't wait for the next instalment...

I remember both articles very well I used to sneak custom and classic American mags in my school tray every day
watch out for the quiet ones ...
Re: 1971 Hemi Road Runner
That number plate looks familiar, I'm sure the car gets to plenty of local events around Hertfordshire way. I'm sure RobTwin will have a photo of it recently.

Re: 1971 Hemi Road Runner
Hi Rob
Thanks for posting. It’s amazing that the the car has remained largely untouched over the last thirty plus years. We ran the car for a year or so before selling it to John Pitt who is sadly no longer with us. John sold the car after running it for a while and I then lost track of it. Surprisingly I haven’t heard from any owner/owners since then. It’s good to see it’s still around.

I think it's usually seen with a giant Wile-e-Coyote inside.
Unfortunately.
