67 hemi GTX - XYY174F

Post by RobTwin »

Car belonged to John Maynard from around 92 till at least 94, as he had it at the 1st Euronats (pics below).

Car apparently has a bit of interesting history. Would someone like to expand?....

story i was told was that the car belonged to a son of a wealthy oil sheik
who had a car collection in a london underground car park type jobbie, a firm used to go in and take the cars away to service them etc, this car was taken for a routine seein to and when it came back did not sound the same as when it left, the car was subject to some sort off investigation and was found to be a true hemi gtx but someone had slid the hemi out and fitted a 318 in its place, the car was sold and somehow john maynard got it, and also aquired a 426 hemi mtr and paired the car/mtr together and hey presto hemi gtx again, think the car has now ended up on jersey, i remember a hemi and transmission around this time being advertised in exchange and mart circa 5-7k i think, maybe the gtx original engine or the engine that found its way in to the gtx,
i stand to be corrected but think this is the basic story,
pretty sure i remember tim fernel was asked to varify that it was indeed a hemi car for the investigation i think he even found its build sheet under the back seat, lovely car think it ran mid 13s with john,

Yes that's basically the jist of it, a guy disappeared with the hemi, and a few other hemi specific parts and the vin tags, I assume the law caught up with him eventually as there was a court case over it. I can't remember now how John came to get hold of it, but I'm pretty sure the original parts were never recovered. I do remember the hemi he had in it had 12.5 compression and a pretty lumpy cam, ran in the 12's on race gas.

Blimey that was an interesting read. Cheeky got nicking that Hemi n all. I mean he could have at least stuck a 440 in it. Trying to cover the tracks of the missing Hemi with a iddy bitty 318 is a bit wishful.

Brilliant story behind that!

Surprised it didn't get "dealt with" by someone other than the law. Must be the way when you rip off someone with serious bucks and connections... :help:

How on earth did he think he would get away with it? Even I would notice the difference between a Hemi and a 318...

Didnt the yanks regularly pull that number on the Hertz people in the 60s with the big block mustangs, they would hire them out for the weekend and give em back with a smaller lower spec engine- what did the sales guy or desk clerk know he was just looking at body work and if it started or not!!

It’s funny that this has come up as I met john for the first time last week as he has just purchased something from me and he saw my satellite and a discussion came about this car and he told me the story he still knows of the car apparently
IF ITS ON WHEELS, LOWER IT!!
