Alternator pants...

Check the charging @ the alternator , could be the bulk head connector corroded , tis the heavy black wire from the alternator that goes through the bulkhead connector & up to the amp meter that normally cause the problems , or the wires loose on the amp meter , as ALL the charging goes via this route,

To carry out a quick check , run a heavy gauge cable from the back of alternator straight to live on battery , if the battery now charges , the problem is as outlined above , if there's still no charge , tis the regulator or alternator. (this is not a permanent fix)

Remember , CHECK ALL THOSE EARTHS.

The gauges are probably a different problem , sort the charging system first.

If you have to change the alternator , go buy one that has a built in..................................................................................

The regulators can give a too low output as well as too high when they are faulty. But usually a low output with no other faults is a bad connection as Adam says.

When you try that good cable directly from the alternator to the battery, if it cures the problem, make sure the voltage is stable (not going up over 14.4-15 volts) when you rev the engine. Just to check that the regulator is working fine.

Also check the regulator has a good earth to the bodywork.

if you cant sort the original set up i would sugest using an alternator of of a leater european spec vehicle, one that can be bought over the shelf at most car shops. i personaly like the japanese units, anything from 30A to 120A is available, as for fitting it, i have supplied a number of kits to put these on big blocks and made spacers to use them on small blocks. the wireing is easy and all my cars run them with no problems. hope you get it sorted (nothing worse than a car on the drive that you cant use because of a silly problem)
