Cacklefest at Goodwood Festival of Speed 11-13 July

Post by Adam »

From the Goodwood website...

"The earth will move – quite literally – as the Goodwood Festival of Speed plays host to a spectacular gathering of perhaps the world’s loudest competition cars – top fuel dragsters.

Building on the success of last year’s Bonneville Salt Flats recreation on the hallowed turf of the Goodwood Cricket Pitch – the world’s oldest – this year the Cricket Pitch will be turned in to a huge American drag strip. Positioned on this will be a spectacular gathering of more than a dozen of the most famous Top Fuel racers; from the first ‘slingshot’ models to the pioneering rear-engined examples of the 1960s and 70s. Most of these will be brought over from the USA specifically for the occasion.

Instead of the cars simply sitting on the display looking magnificent, however, they will periodically fire up each day and go through their engine warming procedure together – a spectacle known as a ‘cackle fest’. It may sound innocuous enough, but these cars are so startlingly loud that the ground vibrates beneath your feet and you can actually feel the noise hitting your chest. It promises to be a surreal experience and unlike anything the Festival audience has ever experienced before.

On display and in action will be everything from Art Chrisman’s very early ‘25’, to examples raced by some of drag racing’s most popular drivers including Don ‘The Snake’ Prudhomme, Don ‘Big Daddy’ Garlits and ‘TV’ Tommy Ivo. It is anticipated that one of Britain’s most famous top fuel dragsters, Mr 6, will also take part, along with a special appearance for Tommy Ivo’s incredible quad-engined ‘Showboat’ exhibition car.

Perhaps surprisingly drag racing is particularly relevant to this year’s Festival theme, which celebrate Britain’s love affair with world motor sport. Top American drag racers Tommy Ivo and Don Garlits toured the UK from 1963 to 1966 with their wild top fuel machines and sparked widespread British interest in this form of racing, which had previously only been popular in the USA. A healthy drag racing community quickly developed in Britain as a result, which still continues to thrive to this day."
