Exhausts

Post by Pete_B »

So Chaps, the time has come to make the old girl a bit more usable, and im thinking a slightly more socially acceptable set of exhaust would be a good way to go, at present I'm thinking a full length 3 inch system with either Dynomax ultra flows or flow masters, 'Im also thniking of swapping out my Hooker super comps for something higher quality, either Doug's or TTI's, however i'm at a bit of a loss for what size might be best they variously seem to come in 1 7/8ths or 2 inch etc.

Its a 440 motor build by Dave with plenty of decent parts, though i'm unsure about actual hp or torque figures. I'm not certain if it will make a difference but its a power steering car with non powered drums ( i only mention it as i imagine there is the possibility for clearance issues around the steering box and im not keen on the notion of denting the headers, particularly as im likely going for a coated set.

Thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.

If you have big flowing heads, rev it hard, use it on the strip, make around 500hp or more, then use the 2" primary pipes. These usually come with 3.5" collectors.

If you really want it loud then run 3" all the way through. I did that. However if I was doing it again I would run 3" to the mufflers and then reduce to 2.5" over the axle to the tail pipes.

Fit a couple of electric exhaust cut-outs before the mufflers if you want it REALLY loud on occasion.

I bought a pair of Flowmasters from Chris at WASP and they sound lovely on my 383 Hi Po. Reasonably quiet while bimbling and lovely rumble.... :thumbright:

What Dave said. 500+ hp and you'll want 3" all the way through from the headers. Below 500 its just noise and not power your making, so 2.5" should suffice.

If you wan't exceptable noise then i'd go Dynomax over Flowmasters..... All 3" Flowmaster systems i've heard can usually wake the dead!

From all the video's i've watched, TTI's and Dynomax give the best sound out there (personal opinion of course). I believe the entire, off the shelf TTI system uses Dynomax Ultraflows.......But don't expect much change from £1500! :thumbright:

I have 2" primary TTI headers with TTI 3" twin system and Dynomax mufflers on the Bee if you want to check that out for fit and clearance...not cheap but you get what you pay for in this area..............

3" flowmasters sound pretty much like open headers IMO.

The bore of the exhaust tube is probably more significant in determining noise levels.
I had Dunomax mufflers on my Dart with 2.5" tube and it was deeply reasonant and could stop conversations at 2000 rpm.

I now have 2.25" tube with the same dynomax type mufflers and the car is significantly quieter

I suspect that the cars have equal performance capability regardless of the tube size.

I'd go with the quieter dynomax over the slowmasters.

That engine will make around 475hp/500lbs torque, with a iron head use
1 7/8 primaries,2.5"exhaust with dynomax mufflers,that will make a quieter.
This is enough to run low12s-high 11s

If your going to step power up in future,as Dave said,2"primaries,3"exhaust but still use dynomax mufflers to keep noise down.

Flowmasters sound coolest though, ask your neighbours

I'd be careful with all that power on the road with drum brakes.
As a point of reference John S had small exhausts on his 383 Satellite. His best time on the day at santa pod was 12.8, i suggested he would probably pick a couple of tenths up by unbolting the exhaust, which he did, although he didn't take them off, he ran 12.4.
The 1"- 7/8 header will have more torque to get that big heavy car moving but the 3" will definitely pick up over the smaller exhaust.
What rear gear and converter is in the car ?
It sounds like you will have some fun this year.

If you decide on a TTI system just shoot me an email and I'll be more then happy to make a nice quote for you.

As for size it's what's already said. If you plan an upping the output of your engine go for 2" primairies, if not it sounds like the 1.7/8" would do the job.

2"(I think, might be 1 7/8) TTI headers and 2.5" TTi twin sys with Flowmasters on mine. I really like the noise now.

When I first bought it new it came with dynomax and it was practically silent - seriously, really really quiet.
Being a 12 year old I swapped the boxes out for flowmasters and it sounds much better now, particularly the initial pickup 'throb'. :)

Depends what you are aiming for really. Flowmasters on a 2.5 sounds good to me for Bbody. Friend has 3" with flowmasters on a camaro and its REALLY loud though. Bigger bore, shorter pipes I guess. :dontknow:

Hey Morgan, i bought those Dynomax silencers off you! They are quiet, but efficient too, just a nice rumble.

The silencers need to come out behind the bumper to keep the noise to an acceptable level, as for flowmasters, they may sound good at first but if you do any sort of journey they will soon wear on you. Whilst 2-1/2" pipes may be sufficient on Morgan's car, they will be the cork in the bottle on yours.
