Engine building and its PITFALLS!

Post by yabadaba »

Hi Mopar Folks.

Some of you know me and some of you don't.
I have been building engines since I was at school.
For over 30 years I have been building Mopar engines.
Mainly as a hobby in between being a Mortgage paying Engineer.
Then about 15 years ago I was given the chance to work in a custom V8 Engineering shop in Maidstone!
I was a happy as a pig in a mud bath...
The Shop was a UK renowned Rover engine specialist company.
As the Rover scene started to die away it became a General machine shop for all V8's and grasstrack 4 cylinder engines.
Many engines were built and some didn't last the course!
Thats just how it is...

Sometimes the more money and time you spent building an engine and the more new parts you throw at it, would just 'MAKE IT WORSE' lol.

Very few engines are 'ALL NEW PARTS'.

There is always a budget and Tough decisions to make , on where to wisely spend the MONEY!

Don't build engines for anyone...you will regret it!

Will's 'Blower motor'.

A very nice chap called Will asked me to throw together a cheap 'blower motor.
As a seasoned engine builder, I said, ''IT CAN'T BE DONE''.
Yes sure it can, I've read all the magazine articles on how you can put 'BLOWERS' on Junkyard motors and run TENS!!!
If these guys put blowers on junkyard engines and they blew up every time, it wouldn't be much of an ARTICLE!

Wills blower MoToR.

I told him several times that I do not have any suitable parts for a blower build.
I will have to find all the pieces here in the UK and mainly in California, where blower motors are plentiful...
Firstly I purchase a 440 bare block from a good friend and take it to Eve's-Engines for a full machining session.
It passed the pressure testing and was duly bored to +30.
After machining and hot-tubbing you could see a very faint hairline crack in one of the bores.
It was re pressure tested and still no leak!

But as a seasoned Engine builder, I would NEVER have carried on with the build.

End of build.

Sorry Will...

The 440 block didn't pass the grade for your MoToR!
What shall we do now?
''Get another block and start again'', he says...
That's easy for you to say, but very costly and time wasting for me!

Yeah right, I've been done this road before.

Buy several engines outta my own pocket and when I find a GOOD one, we can start the build.
That's OK for you, you aren't doing the running around, stripping and cleaning rusty 50 years old junk engines that are damaged, too rusty, already rebored and worn out etc, etc, etc...

I ain't doing it because I am already £500 down and nothing to show for it!

This is a re-run, with my wise head on.

All 440 blocks have problems.
Best advice, buy a new one.

Very wise chap indeed!!!
