Thanks for that. So 24 initial and if it's staying at 34 all in I'm still good on that? I would rather get this carb sorted as its new than changing to a Holley if I don't really need to.

The initial was 21 without any vac advance and 34 with mech advance all in.
Like Pete said, if it starts and in particular, its not overheating then its probably in the ball park. Assuming the timing is good, your stinking exhaust is likely due to too a little too much fuel at idle and the bog, not enough pump shot upon acceleration...What size is the Carb?
No, I didn't make the Damn Yankees this year, I was probably tuning the Carb on the Valiant

Sorry for delay in replying.
The carb is an Edelbrock 600 performer, I've moved the pump shot up to the top hole nearer the pivot. But this seems to have made little or no difference.
Car is starting good when hot or cold and temp seems to be staying where it should be, even in M25 traffic on Sunday.
