Power steering seal kit CJ Chrysler?
Hi folks
Does anyone know if there is a power steering seal kit available (UK or abroad) for my 75 CJ Chrysler? My mechanic thinks he can replace the offending seal without removing the box from the car - may be a bit ambitious! Apparently the power steering in these was a commonly used Chrysler set up?
Any help/suggestions/alternaives would be much appreciated!
Thanks, Andy

work out sector size
1 and 1/16 or 1 and 1/8
buy kit or seal you need from rockauto
suggest its a thin sector box
so you are looking at power steering based A body (dart barracuda etc) from 1968 to 1973
if its a fat sector box we need to work out a US car that had a fat sector in the early 70s and risk getting that kit
the kits cost about £30 and there is no guarantee that all the parts fit
but most should
nothing in your box is different from a US box.
only the case
working out which US box based on year might be an issue
they are all chrysler built boxes based on the same saginaw design
and to be honest nothing much changed between 1962 and about 1980.
if totally stuck rodley motors used to have a pile of boxes for reconditioning, bits could be swapped into your case
if totally totally stuck
we can cross ref aussie parts with US parts different years of aussie parts had same numbers as US parts and we go hunting on Ebay.
none handed parts all the same
but different numbers for RHD and LHD parts
but in all cases i can see the RHD and LHD parts are the same parts, dimension wise.
the bearings for the sector are drawn cup full compliment needle rollers.
the bearings for the worm/screw/ballnut are harder to get but look to be standard saginaw cup and captive ball bearings
all bearings and seals can also be ordered as items from you local bearing supplies place if you can be arsed to spend a few years cross referencing catalogues
or if you can persuade the guy at the counter to stop asking you for a chassis number or an OEM part number and just get him measure the oily item you plonk in front of him.

Re: Power steering seal kit CJ Chrysler?
Thanks Dave, great advice as ever.
I think I have attached a pic of the set up from the parts catalogue. I haven't managed to garner any dimensions from it though. I will make some calls tomorrow and see if I can make some progress as it's a constant drip which cooks nicely on the exhaust!
Thanks again
Andy

Re: Power steering seal kit CJ Chrysler?
find the seal number on that diagram
it will be labeled nn-nn-nn
use that number to look it up in the parts list
it will have a code 2nnnnnnnn or 3nnnnnnnn
i have some US parts books we can look it up
its its the sector seal the one above the pitman arm. you could indeed swap it.
pig to get out but can be put in with a tube to knock it into place
2 seals
one for fat sector one for thin sector
easy to get but hard to ID size

Re: Power steering seal kit CJ Chrysler?
Hi Dave
Just took the diagram to my spannerman as this is above my skill level. The leak is from the pressure control valve so he suggested getting the parts highlighted in the attached photo and he will attempt to replace with the box in situ. So the parts are,
O ring 19.02.15 to valve - 1823150
to port - 1826164
Ring 19.56.90 1536268
O ring 19.57.13 1733612
Adaptor 19.58.15 2267528
O ring 19.58.18 2267530
I'm guessing getting these in a kit might be a bit of a stretch as it seems to be more than seals?
Would love to get your opinion on the above.
Many thanks
Andy

Re: Power steering seal kit CJ Chrysler?
ok you don'ty need to worry about dimensions in this area I THINK that part is the same as the US part
i.e seals should be available
or you could get a bit from another box to fix it
that valve controls the bias to the steering
its position on the body of the steering box dicates how much pump pressure is assigned to turning left and turning right
a few thou 1 way and the car will wind its steering to left lock constantly and a few thou too much the other and it will wind its way to the right with some considerable force
getting it right in the right place is key
getting the right thickness of seals is key
id start with the O rings. and id start buy getting an O ring set from machine mart or a kit from rock auto
on a v8 i think you might have to take off the exhaust manifold to get the box out upwards/forwards not a problem on a six
you might get it past the strut rod/torsion bar but ive never tried on a power box car

Re: Power steering seal kit CJ Chrysler?
Thanks again Dave. I'm going to take the box out, probably easier to come up than down as the torsion bar looks to be plum in the way. I may well have the whole box rebuilt if it's coming out - hopefully can then forget about it for a few more years!
I owe you a few beers, which isn't that unfeasable as I'm not a million miles away from Twickenham.
Much appreciated!

Re: Power steering seal kit CJ Chrysler?
if they are a specialist you take away some of the lottery you sometimes have with rockauto. not because rockauto don't have the parts more to do with the fact they have so many and such a range of different quality. i.e they'll sell you a kit for the size of your wallet but you are hoping that the kit manufactuerer had their eyes open when the made the kit, and that our Aussie/US guesstimate based on year fits
you'd be looking for an early 70s US power steering rebuild kit
Oz trailed the US by 1-2 years in a number of areas when it came to Parts they shipped in
mainly becasue of the production numbers for the period between 62 and 82 were in tens -100s of thousands for the whole period not 100s of thousands per model per year. aussie production in total was less than i years worth in the US even including trucks and 50s build up Kits from canada cars.
there will be a risk involved in any purchase but on the whole you should be able to fix your leak and build an as new box
look up mopar action feature on building a police/firm feel (chrysler speak) equivalent power steering box. I think they had help from the company who later adopted the firmfeel name.
either way its a chrysler power steering box based on a saginaw design and the internal parts were most probably shipped in from the US. why would the aussie factory tool up to make the hard to make internals when chrysler had a factory in the states dedicated to building all of their power and manual boxes. not ecconomic at all to tool up for precsion engineering of those parts for a handful of cars when US output was so high and australian output was so tiny.
in a number of cases RHD steering parts made for RHD barracudas in the US have the same part numbers aa RHD parts made for RHD valiants used in Aus. hence i think potentially a common source or at least a shared blue print.

Re: Power steering seal kit CJ Chrysler?
Cheers Dave
I ordered a Barracuda kit from Rock Auto a couple of days ago, about £10 all in and apparently contains all the seals needed to rebuild a pump. Another chap in Oz advised a Barracuda kit as well so by law of averages it should be what I need.
Just got my cast ally trans pan from the States so that, and some rust killing, will keep me occupied until the seals arrive.
Thanks again
