Question!
I've just decoded a new member's 69 Charger to assist in registration with DVLA and it has code A41.
Online decoders say "White Hat Special".
The real decoder, Galen Govier's white book says Charger Spring Special with Vinyl Roof.
I'm wondering if they are basically the same thing. This car is a March 69 build and has a black vinyl roof which looks original.
I can't really see there would be two types of Special from Dodge in the same season.
The V1X code is vinyl roof - black (other colours available, 23 different colour codes!).
I think the term White Hat has led people and urban myth to think that they all had white vinyl, seems sensible, BUT it seems to be wrong.
The adverts say the White Hat Special could have vinyl in white, black, green or tan. Some great images here of the old adverts.

What is also interesting is that the online decode comes up with some things as not known, whereas the GG books have it listed. A01 comes up not known, whereas GG says Light Package.
It just shows, don't believe everything on the internet!
Anyone got some thoughts on this? Are there any more Spring Specials over here?

Great ads Matt, looks like a marketing tool.' Pretty girl in a white hat'. Never heard of these so can't help.

You need a copy of the books. Luckily I have them, they are not easy to come by now.

Re: White Hat Special or Spring Special?
I'll hazard a guess that Dodge marketed it as the white hat special, while Plymouth just used spring special which was the same description used on all the built sheets. Be interesting to have a definitive answer on that.

Re: White Hat Special or Spring Special?
I'm hoping Tony O might have a slant on it. You could be right Blue, as the code would be common for Dodge and Plymouth, but only Dodge did the White Hat Special.
I think you have probably solved it with some straightforward common sense and a good deal of Mopar know how!

Re: White Hat Special or Spring Special?
I seemed to me of the two brands, Dodge was the marketed as the more upmarket of the two.
