Sideways photos
Can anything be done about photos loading up sideways? I’ve tried various things and I can’t stop it happening.

Re: Sideways photos
I could be wrong but I think it is a sizing issue.
Big Pictures WILL load, but they automatically rotate, which is annoying...
If you can be arsed, try to re-size and attempt an upload to see the results.

Re: Sideways photos
yes i think that's right, if they are re-sized first that somehow 'fixes' the rotation and stops them auto-rotating when posted

Re: Sideways photos
I see, so the obvious question, what size to resize to?

Unfortunately I think you are on a voyage of discovery unless Martin Walker can advise you..

Re: Sideways photos
well ... i don't think it matters
i just posted a photo in the Tatton Park show thread, when i posted the original it re-sized it automatically but put it in sideways
i then re-sized it to 900 x 1600 which made it 266kb and saved it
posted again on the Tatton Park show thread, it went in the right way and further reduced it to 450 x 800 and 111kb
i suspect it's not the actual resizing of the photo but the act of editing and saving that fixes the orientation, it removes it's ability to auto-rotate
i'm no expert, just found that works through trial and error

Re: Sideways photos
That’s proper odd, I just randomly cropped a couple of photos and they post the correct way round now. As you say it doesn’t seem to be the size it’s just going through the procedure. Cheers chap!

Re: Sideways photos
Well worked out chaps!
When I'm out taking photos, with half a mind on this problem I will try and just take photos 'landscape' as it's only 'portrait' that causes the problem.
And when I take that photo in landscape that I would normally have used portrait, I'll frame it so that it can be cropped later to make it portrait.
Bit of a faff but at least it doesn't cause problems when posting on here.
But with the method that Si mentioned, I could just take it portrait as normal but allow a bit of extra room to crop it and job done!

Re: Sideways photos
I just cropped the photos the smallest amount and it worked, I don’t think you even need to take it into consideration when taking the photo in the first place.

Jpg files have multiple sections in them (raw and PNG do as well)
the obvious one is the data for the image
another one is the EXIF data which is the exchangeable image file format. It allows jpgs to be used on multiple devices and allows them to display correctly...provided everyone follows the standard
some don't follow the standard.
Apple, Google , Microsoft and the Linux mob all have this idea that they know best and all interpret or bend standards to fit with their aims of world domination or the peculiarities of their operating system and default tools.
The EXIF section contains orientation data. ( it also contains GPS data, the time ,the date, the camera, lots of image and resolution and size stuff)
some browsers use it for orientation, some just look at the dimensions of the image and display as they see fit.
try doing a slide show of PC stored images on a samsung and then on a sony TV .... what works on one is sideways on the other....
by editing the file on you PC you remove what the phone or camera put in the exif data, and replace it with what your pc thinks is right.
id expect the camera to follow the standard. the jpg standard was invented by a group of photographic/camera experts
id expect a phone to follow what its operating system designer thought was best based on the fact you can use your phone any which way orientation to take a photo. an image that is displayed at least at the time you set up your short, the right way up, what happens once its recorded in the phone is dictated by the phone.
id expect microsoft and Apple to ignore everyone and do what they like but its hard to say. the editing tools in windows have to work with chrome and edge browsers and a host of image editing and display software
much like apple needs it all to work with safari
chrome, edge and safari are browsers based on the same webkit core tech, there really isn't much difference, which belongs to neither google apple or MS
what your PC thinks is right seems to be what the messageboard likes
anyway... as discussed above, edit it on your PC and you get EXIF data in the file that the messagboard seems to like which is why a minimal edit works
or get a command line tool to reset exif data across multiple files.
Pain in the ass and you'd have to experiment, but might be useful if you post up a lot.
there may be a setting in the messageboard that dictates how images are processed for uploaded files
a setting will have been carefully chosen for the best compromise
