Are they going to refund the remaining x months of a current paid-for disk though?
I have been assured that you will be refunded for every full month of the remaining disc.

I seem to remember seeing a scanned magazine article somewhere (from one of the classic car mags) that outlined everything that had to be done to get your status changed to 'Historic', but I can't find it now! It may have been on facebook, which is useless for searching

Any ideas?

The latest Practical Classics magazine has a guide.
Sent mine off and now waiting for "historic" class update on the V5C and my first free tax disc in April.
BTW the vehicle has to be already "declared manufacturied in 1973" on the V5C or have an accompying letter verifying its build date/year from a club or vehicle marque authority.

So what year can you go up to now on a historic free tax disc?
The year of manufacture thing has always been an issue with the Aussie cars. This is one reason I perused the factory lists. None of the UK sold Aussie cars had a build date stamped on the compliance tags. The only date the DVLA had for any of them was the first registered date which was often much later. There are a number of VH's being first registered in 74!
The factory list I sent Matt and Pete has all the build dates for the Chargers. There are some holes in the list but there are a number of cars in that list that would qualify for free tax if the owner were to ask for it.

Anything before 01/01/1974. So one year more than it was.
Didn't know that about the date stamp on the later valiants.
Think the recording of the manufacture date of the aussie valiants over here must have changed after the VG then. Mine clearly reads 11/70 and was an export built for the UK.

Oh well that's brave of the current govt then

So much for bringing it back to 25 years or whatever it was they promised in the last election. 1 year jeez!
I can move back to UK now since my VJ would now qualify. Oh wait, lets not bother.
None of the VH or later Valiants had build dates on the compliance tags. They actually changed the order of the VIN to remove it.
VJ6H29BK19-0907 would have been mine if it had been sold in Aus, but it actually reads VJ6H29/0907.
The CxC Sedans had the X35 option added in the place of the build date in their VINs.

I found the article, and it suggest I need the V5C, a V10 to apply for another tax disk, and also a V14 to get a refund for the remaining months on the current disk. Does this sound right? Can I do all this now, or should I wait until April??

That is the way I understand that article too.
I plan to do it in the next few days in the expectation the DVLA will take a little longer than 5 days to process.
My V5 shows a first registered date of 01/01/1973. Does yours have similar?

I can't remember exactly, but I got a letter from the club so I could get an age-related reg number (it was on a V plate previously), so the V5 will say a 1973 build date now.

Cool!
My Monaro has the above date because of a similar letter from The Holden UK Register. However the DVLA could have just looked at the compliance plate to see it was made in early '73, but I was told that they won't use their eyes and brains to figure it out and rely on expert advice to cover themselves for human error so I needed the letter.

This is for all vehicles built up to but not including 1st January 1974.
It doesn't matter when the vehicle was first registered, it's when it was first manufactured that counts. This will either be stated on the current V5C with either a build date or a declaration, or a letter of proof of build date will need to be provided.
Update the V5C in the change in tax class section to state "Historic", sign & date it. This ensures you get back the V5C with the correct tax status.
Fill in the V10 to apply for a tax disc. Again, state "Historic" in the tax class section.
The V14 is only to claim back any remaining tax (not needed if the vehicle is SORN'd).
You will also need a current MOT and Insurance (over 1 months worth) to be sent off with the above.
There is no time limit as the tax status does not come into force until 1st April anyway, but the onus is on the owner of the vehicle to action, not the authorities, as they will unlikey be sending out reminders.
I have sent everything I need to off to the DVLA (recorded delivery), so I let you know how I get on.

Hmm.
Built, manufactured, first reg. Lots to be argued there with the likes of the DVLA.

If you do a 'vehicle enquiry' for your car with your reg number, manufacturer and V5 document reference at this link:
https://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPo ... home/intro
...you should hopefully see a 'Year of Manufacture' if it's different to date of 1st registration:
Date of Liability 01 09 2014
Date of First Registration 23 10 1979
Year of Manufacture 1973
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 5000cc
CO₂ Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type PETROL
Export Marker N
Vehicle Status Licence Not Due
Vehicle Colour YELLOW
Vehicle Type Approval Not Available
Date of Last V5C Issued No Result Found
Vehicle Excise Duty rate for vehicle
6 Months Rate £123.75
12 Months Rate £225.00

Just checked that link Thanks.
Seems that the link shows first Reg as 5 years ago when I imported and manufacture as 1973.
Where the V5 shows first reg as 01/01/73.
Cheers
