get Marc S to make you one of these ,i find it easy to use better than vac gauges ,,,,Sorry about the problems but they are easily solved if not rather annoying ...One thing i have found out is the stock MW air filters choke the life out of my engine ,,,It runs very rich with them on and i do not want to go down the route of rejetting as it runs perfect without them on ....Looking for some mw velocity stacks but they are no longer available as copys ....keep struggling on

We modded the base of our Sport Satellite's stock type air cleaner to add a bit more gap where the air gets in - it's about 1/4" now instead of 1/8". still not much but enough to make a difference, hopefully but I'm reluctant to chop these around... maybe worth getting a repro to modify, if they do them?

I saw that/those contraptions when you posted it a while ago but still dont know what they are? Presume that's a manometer on top? Do you only have one?

I put it on one carb at a time ,, it tells you quiet easily if both carbs are working together in harmony ...Of course there is a bit more too it than that timing ,plugs etc ...As i said before the MW air filters i have are killing my engine and the plugs are sooted up very quickly ...Take them of and run it for a bit and the thing sounds crisper and the plugs cleaner ......at the moment i can not face tearing all down to get it set up for these filters ..as for the carb tool it is made from a ali carb cap and a carb thingy (Not sure what you call it ) Marc done his magic and joined them together ....

I hadn't considered that the air filters might be causing our sooty plugs. I was hoping some careful carb tuning (now we can) would cure that

sounds like a drive with no filters is on the cards to confirm that then?

I got the carb cap from Chris Goodale ,the gauge Marc got for me ..Marc machined the center of the carb cap to take the gauge ....

With the inlet off, we could see the main cause of the vacuum leak was most likely in the area we suspected (near the distributor) as the gasket had delaminated.

As it's virtually impossible to get the valve covers off without removing the inlet , we also replaced the valve cover gaskets as there's always been a bit of an oil leak from them too

So, 4 weeks after finding the vacuum leak, armed with new gaskets and inlet bolts and washers, we got the valve covers back on, cleaned up the inlet, put a fresh coat of Eastwoods stainless steel paint on the exh manifolds and set about fitting the inlet...

The new inlet bolts came with spring and flat washers but it took a fair bit of jiggling and on / off and back on with the inlet (not good when you've already fitted the gaskets) before we realised that the washers dont fit in 6x counterbores inside the manifold, so the washers were stopping the bolts from engaging in the heads properly. Couple that with the fact that the 8 screws are 4 different lengths and they only fit if you put them in their intended locations
Seems obvious really, and we did know that, but we had already noted what length bolt came out of what hole and it wasn't until we felt there was something wrong that we found that at least one of the bolts was originally in the wrong location so wasnt fully engaging with its thread in the head. This probably wasnt helping with the vacuum either, as it's inside the manifold


This pic shows one of the 6x screws inside the manifold, accessed by removing the plug above. You can see the counterbore where the cap head is - this is where the washers were getting caught up and preventing the bolts from engaging fully...

After 5 hours of wrestling with the inlet and its 8 bolts, finally managed to get it all torqued down and ready to put the carbs back on, again

Good news that it’s back together.

What a pain to find you’ve followed the previous pattern and then find it was together wrong. Just massively impacts the time suck when you are so convinced it should go back together the same way and it just won’t, I know that feeling!

Thanks Stu, yes it was a bit of a surprise. Stu(twin) went round the bolts with a torque wrench before we removed the inlet to check they were all ok and they were all to spec except one that went a another turn, which got us wondering

But it's all good now. Well, we've given it a couple of miles run and seems ok.

We've got a show this afternoon - 'Classic In The Walled Garden' at Luton Hoo estate, near Harpenden (posher than Luton ) - that we wanted to get it finished for, as it's 20 years today that we collected the car after Tony O imported it for us from North Carolina
