Prior to setting number 1 up with an inlet and exhaust valve etc. I marked the top of the valve stem so I can see how the roller rolls across the top of the stem this tells me if I have the correct length push rod. If the mark is too close to the exhaust side, the push rod is too long, too close to the inlet and the push rod is too short, you want it as close to the centre as possible. This as close as I could get it without running out of adjuster thread. You need an adjustable push rod to get the correct length

I think you need to shim under the rocker shaft to get the mark dead centre on the top of the valve stem. I think 20thou shims are available?Carl wrote:Prior to setting number 1 up with an inlet and exhaust valve etc. I marked the top of the valve stem so I can see how the roller rolls across the top of the stem this tells me if I have the correct length push rod. It didn't say anywhere to use bone dry hyd lifters. I know I should of used a solid lifter, I didn't have any at the time so I thought I would see what I got by using a hyd lifter to be honest it has been playing on my mind to re do it so I've got hold of a couple of solid lifters and will do it again properly this time.Les Szabo wrote:All very nice, but where did it say you check VTP clearance with a bone dry Hyd lifter?.....did you use lightweight springs on the test or the springs your going to run?.

I didn't use light weight springs, but lighter springs than the recommended springs for the cam for the break in.

Just trying to make sure you get a more accurate VTP check...you would prob be ok with that cams overlap and duration,......the prob with an empty hyd. lifter is that they have a certain amount of compression distance, when its dry you can Bananarama! down past the point it would normally go when the engine is running and it has oil in it. This will give you less lift on the VTP test.

I need lash caps I recon, lifting the rockers will push the roller closer to the exhaust side. I need to bring the rear of the rocker down and the roller side up to bring the roller closer to the centre of the valve stem, shortening the adjustable push rod and setting the lash to get it anywhere near the centre of the valve requires the rocker adjuster to have to wind down too far, I could get longer valves, another alternative is to have the pedestals milled down, or I need another set of rockers?Dave wrote:I think you need to shim under the rocker shaft to get the mark dead centre on the top of the valve stem.
