What carb is it?
If its a Holly and you are going to North Weald next week we could take a look for you.
It's a Carter 4bbl. It's had an "at home" rebuild, just needs setting up right. Car drives ok, but is running rich and smells so. Driving slow around town it's good. As soon as I can put my foot down it bogs down when I go back on the gas. I'm booked in at Battlesbridge that Sunday. What's on at North Weald?

Sounds like not enough accelerator pump, but that is the Carter's weakness and there is not much scope for making it more rich..........

There is scope fore adjustment on the acc pump, there are three holes on the arm and it's in the center one at the moment. I'm learning all the time, but confess to not knowing much about working on cars, especially adjusting carbs. If it's running too rich at the moment won't it need to lean off a bit? Although I'm wary that it should not be too lean. It's running better than before we refurbed the carb and doesn't smell as bad, but it stil stinks. I've been told the bogging down is due to running too rich also, this sound right?

I suggest you start a new thread on it but in essence you can have a lean bog or a rich bog.
My guess is it is lean on acceleration but (maybe) rich on idle. Carbs have about 3 circuits and can be rich or lean in any of them.....
....also Lean and rich smell the same......

Yep Petes about there, from memory theres a couple of adjustments on the pump shot by way of hole selection on the arm but thats about it. I guess the diaphram to the pump shot inside may be worn also?
Heres the do at North Weald

We were camped literally between Miles and the French guys last year, and it was fine for me and me nine year-old daughter! There was a French generator not far from us which was operating until the early hours, but that was the only slight annoyance. It would be good to try to get the same spot again this year, but we'll see.
