Adrian, Line-o-locks work in 2 different ways you can either plumb them to lock the front brakes on (good) or switch the rear brakes off (bad- cos if you forget to switch it off you drive around on front brakes only).
You can simply put one in line on front brake circuit, with an elecccy one you simply install it into the front brake as it comes out of the master cyclinder or if you dont like fancy electric things you route front brake pipe into car near you & have a manual valve which you physically turn on or off
simple as that

Ade on a manual car you need it to lock your brakes on- you don't have enough feet otherwise!

If you don't have one on an auto car & you left foot brake you can cook your rear brakes or at the very least wear them out quicker!

It don't work; I had a Line Lock when the Sox Barracuda was a 4 speed - it is essential.....
