Steve , this is a 15 min job once the cover is off. no special tools , and no setting up of the diff . Easy.Steve wrote:Nice job!! Axles and diffs etc are all in the 'too difficult' box for me at the mo...leave it with you pros till I have to do it!
Undo the pin retaining bolt/pin, remove old pin,sun and planet gears, replace with locker, fit new pin supplied, fit retaining bolt/pin. Done
That's your 8 3/4 sure grip Steve. But I reckon you could get your head round one with the right tools and a bit of instruction.Steve wrote:Does sound simple....read somewhere about measuring lash tolerances or something like that....seemed to get complicated very quickly

I've got one (Lock Right)in my 1950 series one 80 V8 Land Rover.Bozwell wrote:i had to look it up to see how they worked. i guess you did your research?
hope you've got quick steering reactions
Thats fun , it's very short wheelbase and, that is twitchy.
But the Dart is a big long wheel base car, so should be OK,..............maybe..........Well we will see
thats if you take the centre and pinion out.Steve wrote:Does sound simple....read somewhere about measuring lash tolerances or something like that....seemed to get complicated very quickly
on these axles you need a case spreader to put the blasted things back in without risking destroying the shims
if you don't need to disturb them and can swap the differential part of the diff out without dimantling the centre like here you are onto a good thing
whether you like the effect of a locker is a whole other matter
if this had been a sure grip LSD then swappig to the locker would have involved taking it all to bits and buildi ng the locker into a spare open centre.
the locker replaces the open centre's centre i.e the free running splined side gears and spider gears with a toothy sandwich held apart by some springs
the locked or unlocked state is conrolled by some little springs and the speed of each wheel
i belive the locking and unlocking in normal driving can be somewhat unpredicatable until you learn to drive it

looking good in every way.
have you done the big long ruler thing to check for distortion??
Dave
I took all care when preping and welding, but it does bother me.
But I'm too frightened to check it
It could be a very expensive cock up.
I'll know for sure when I put the shafts it, and the bearings just press in by a tap tap tap
Blue, I am a no nothing when it comes to American cars, this being my first one.
But I have had 2 Land Rovers with auto locking diffs.
1 Detroit locker in a 90,
you could not notice any difference to an open diff on the road, top quality piece of kit, and never noisy.
However the Lock Right in the 80 Land rover , you can hear it clicking, when pulling out of a junction, and it is a harsher unit .
I really not too sure what to expect with the Spartan locker in the Dart
But I have to complete the axle build just to see
