stock 318 oil leak

Hi All,
Have a 68 Dodge D100 with a stock 318 engine.
It hasn't been started for 6 months.
Started it up today and noticed oil pouring out from underneath. Stopped engine straight away.
It looked like the leak was coming from the filter.
The filter wasn't that tight so spun it off thinking the rubber had split.
Turns out the filter had split...where it is pressed together, there was a 1" split.
I am thinking something has caused the oil pressure to increase and force the filter apart...is this a possiblity?
Looking for any pointers/advice please.
Regards
Mick

If the pressure relief valve in the oil pump was stuck that would do it. Unfortunately it's a sump off job to check that theory out....

Thanks Blue...Looks like I will have the sump off and clean/renew the pump. I normally get most of my engine spares from Rockauto. Can you recommend anyone over here who might have a pump/spring kit/filter/
gaskets in stock?
Thanks
Mick

Would imagine Real Steel or USA Automotive would have all those parts in stock.
