Can I drive car with powe steering belt removed? (with pics)

Post by MilesnMiles »

Ok, Mopar Nats now under threat due to power steering pump fail. Just trying to identify and find anew one is a game in itself.
If I just remove the belt and drive without power steering can anything go wrong besides giving me a hernia?

I might be wrong, but as far as I'm aware you can drive with no belt on, think it's more of a get you off the motorway to safety kind of a deal though. Long distances ( like, your place to the pod and back ) would be a no, no. You risk causing damage to the power steering pump and maybe the steering box as well. I think

yes wont do any damage, Id drain the fluid out to make steering lighter.
In one of my race cars i used a power steering rack manually for a few yrs no problem, other than heavy steering at low speeds(this was to get the lock ratio I wanted)

I know this goes without saying...but I'll say it anyway! Most PS belts do't just drive the PS, often the water pump too (maybe alternator?)....Obviously, these are required :D
