Hi
First start of the day, it will not select a gear unless I give it a rev, then its fine for the rest of the day.
Transmission oil looks ok and fully topped up, so done a bit of searching - I know the Car has had a hard time in its former life, but the oil doesn't smell burnt.
I intend draining the oil and changing the filter, (I wouldn't be surprised it this has never been done) however after this I'm guessing I need to be looking at the Pump ? ... or giving it to a transmission specialist, suggestions welcome ???
Cheers

I might be telling granny how to suck eggs here.
Have you checked it running when hot.
Sounds like it's short of oil first thing as it has drained into the sump.
After starting, it's pumped up into the galleries and pressure s up.
Just my 2 Bob's worth.

Hi Steve
No problem, sometimes saying the simplest things solves a problem ... maybe you could humour me here tho, I was assuming the dip stick on the transmission was the same idea as the engine dip stick, as in you measure it when its cold ?
Assuming this is the case, it was fine - anyway, got the sump off and just letting it drain down, will change the filter out and see how it goes with fresh oil.

Hi Jimbo.
I’ve used a branded Dextron 2 in all of my Yanks over the years and had no issues. I’m sure others will be along with their recommendations.
As for checking the fluid level I too have always preferred checking idling in Park at running temperature. Some sticks I’ve seen have a hot and cold mark.
Draining the fluid is a good idea in any event but often you’re left with old fluid still in the converter. I have had success in the past with having a lazy transmission flushed out by a flushing machine, most good gearbox places have one. Got to be worth a try before pulling it to pieces.

Hi Jimbo
Thats probably the answer to your problem you always check when its hot. You should only use Dextron 2 in mopar and GM not fords you can use ford type F in Mopar boxes if you want a harder shifting box. Dont use any sealer on the sump gasket as it as a tendency to break off and get into the box just make sure that that the sump rails are flat and dont over tighten. Some early converters have a drain plug but if not you can keep flipping it back and forth trying to drain it.

START THE CAR, Get the engine warm and select foreward and reverse a few times let it bring the drive in when it wants to do not rev it to get it to drive once its warm let it idle in N and then dip it , needs to be between the marks but only just above the low mark, never idle it in park,Ever,,,,,,,,,,

Cool, cheers for the tips guys, just heading off for a bit of afternoon garage therapy right now.
Dextron 2 it is then ... so something like this:

Do you think they make these containers deliberately just under the amount you need
Cheers

Re: Torqueflite 727
Yes sorry missed the bit out about selecting the gears before checking, apologies.
Had not realised you don’t get a accurate reading unless it’s in neutral, how much of a difference is there likely to be please?

Re: Torqueflite 727
Hi Derek
The oil flow is working differently when in park, there is no lubrication to the pump bush, it will get torn up if left idling for a long period, there will be very little difference if dipped in N as to P but will be a little bit higher in P,,

Re: Torqueflite 727
And also i say just above the low mark, as the trans just doing a few miles or running on your drive will not get anything like as hot as when you really put some miles on it or abuse it then the oil level will come up a lot to the full mark,,,,,,,,,, hope this helps chaps,,,,,,,,,,, HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL

Re: Torqueflite 727
Some useful tips here, cheers
Well got the sump off, the filter did look pretty grim and on the plus side, found the culprit to leaky box
Just got to find a new seal
