My Coronet has no front side lamps working at the moment. Rears are fine and I have indicators on one side (both rear fine), swapped bulbs front to rear and no change. The other issue is that the twin filament bulb doesn’t seem to fit properly, or at all in the bulb holder. Anyone had this issue and know whether I need a special bulb fitment?

Have you checked to see if you have power at the sidelight bulb holders, Are you puting the bulb in right, is the bulb twin filament with offset pins at different heights. Bulb should be a 480.

Thanks Derek, I’m sure the bulb is wrong, doesn’t have offsets. I also used a test wire which established that the bulb holder isn’t earthed. A double reason why it’s wrong. I’ll get the right bulb and try again.
Any idea who stocks them? Google search threw up nothing in the UK

Every car spares shop should stock them, just ask for a 380 bulb

Earths, earths and earths!

Earths a clearly the Thing, I’ve ordered the correct bulbs.

finding them in orange is sometimes an issue, or it was, bulb paint is a bit crap, luckily i've only needed to do it once.

depends on MOT man if he likes orange blinkers and doesn't mind orange side lights
or if he likes white side lights and doesn't mind white blinkers

think mine have faded to a kind of beigh/coffee kind of colour,
My MOT man likes the car, ponts out any dangers and i fix em, or get em fixed, but for the small things i don't tend to have a problem

keep in mind that you can get an LED bulb replacment with in built resistance that has 50% white and 50% orange LEDS and an offset bayonet fitting

might be nice avoid the bulb paint or orange bulb search

gives you solid white side light that blinks orange. works well if you paint the inside of the housing smooth white

Hi Dave, thanks for info. Can’t say MOT is an issue, but I’ve managed to track down the correct offset bulbs along with some other parts I need from Rockauto. Hoping that will put this to bed.

If the bulb holder is pressed into the reflector and the reflector is earthed corrosion can be an issue between the two. Cleaning up the area and then running solder into the joint will fix it.

Ok ta Blue. The reflector does have corrosion but where the bulb holder goes it looks ok. That said, my test showed a lack earth,
So I’ll do as you suggest, basically to make firm metal contact between bulb holder and reflector.

Yes that’s it, some or all of your problems will be that.

I went round all my bulb holders and added small earth leads that run to the body as the 'holder to lamp earth' system is always dodgy. I can take my holder's out of the light and the bulbs stay on. Much better in my opinion

I haven’t actually solved this yet due to other jobs, but I tried to run solder around the bulb holder and it wouldn’t take. Strange thing is, I have opposite functioning lights on the front,
Passenger side only has indicator on (no side lamp)
Driver side has only side lamp (no indicator)
A bit confusing as they are dual filament bulbs.

Have you considered just completely rewiring the system Miles? It is quite easy and you are very experienced. I did it on my Fury and it resolved all issues. I can't recommed earth straps on all holders enough. Good earths cure most issues and is a very simple thing to do

it is very much a way to avoid issues, but its more complicated than cutting off the last 6 inches of suspect wires and soldering on a new bit with a new connector

i dug into my loom about 2 years ago had about a meter of under dash stuff un wrapped
and everything from battery to bulkead

the insulation on the wires that had been wrapped was vibrant in colour and felxible. in stark contrast to anything exposed outside of the wrap under the bonnet
i.e lights igntion and battery/regulator
all of which got a going over to check them for splitting and corroded connectors one of which was the problem virdigris does not conduct electricity
new bullets or spades added if necessary

whats wrapped tends to be OK

i was luckly Mr scotchlok had not visited, and only 1 stupid splice for a none existant anti theft device to deal with
melted headlight switch connector block was swapped for a decent spare and ammeter was removed re insulated at the studs and put back.
