Re: SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE
Really happy for you Steve and this was a well thought through move. Just a word of caution Stuart if the south west has been a frequent bolt hole then you probably know well the pros and cons. Living in Cornwall we often find people who move down after a couple of visits then expressing disappointment in damp winters or when they realise the shopping is limited or they experience the smells of the country (one such left a note on a farmers fence threatening Environmental Health action unless he stopped his farm smelling). Certainly during the summer the A30 can be as choked as the A127. I totally agree we don’t have much time on this planet so spend it in as stress free an environment as possible....but do some homework first!

Yes Simon. Wise council…..Without boring you with detail we have a place in a very small village inland from Dartmouth,it’s my wife’s aunts old place which we have holidayed at for twenty plus years latterly being left the place. We are well liked in the community, very important to us both, and have several friends there too. We are often asked when we are coming to live permanently and we both understand the drawbacks, smell wouldn’t be one thankfully as my garage is next to a very active dairy farm which apparently smells awful, something that passes me by

Sounds excellent, as long as theres a pub in semi walking distance sounds idyllic!

I guess we’ll see,in all honesty we worry about the complete change of pace and remoteness, the south east is not all bad. Thanks for listening

Not the best situation James, sometimes it needs a step back to at least try and evaluate options.James Vette wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 22 1:55 am Stress free? I'm stressed nearly every single day because of work. My brain is wired that way has been for years sadly.

Re: SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE
Moving further out or getting that one bedroom house with a five car garage?
Re: SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE
Need something a bit more suitable to grow old in, we currently live in a house with very steep stairs over 3 floors, a garage with awful access in a narrow street where parking is an issue plus after 25 years we are ready for a change. Where we go will very much depend on where the right house turns up,hardly anyone seems to be moving these days so the choice is very limited.

Tricky.
It’s a funny market all round at the moment, something will show up,we had three false starts over three years buying our forever home, the patience gets tried.

Re: SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE
I took the decision to retire early and take a gamble. I ended up hating my job and spent too much time stressing and commuting and not enough time surfing. Made me wonder why I’d moved to Newquay only to commute to another town every day for 20+ years.
I’ve got less money, but all the time in the world. My partner jacked her job in too and now has a much better and easier job working from home. Cash for cars is more sparse, but I expected that and I’m still just about in the game.
This week I surfed 5 days out of 7, drove all over Cornwall with mates looking for the best waves.
I’d say to anyone who’s thinking about down sizing, take stock, do the calculations
and crack on with it.
There always a reason not to do things, that’s the easy way out.

Some great thoughts there, and nice to know I'm not on my own having that desire to drop out a bit and just slow the pace of life down. As has been said, there are things to look into and, certainly where I am, if shops and pubs are important to you, you would be very disappointed.
Good luck Blue, I'm sure the right place is out there for you. I had the same thoughts as I have bad knees. I made sure I moved to a house that can be used on one level if needed. I have a downstairs bedroom if needed, no steps, wide doors and a downstairs bathroom with a walk in shower. Sounds daft but it was on my list of needs.
Miles, you are living the dream! I was always under the impression you enjoyed work as it was a pretty specialised (and interesting) field you were in. Can't be better than surfing! Glad Cathy is sorted too.
Think the biggest part of what I'm eluding to is the simplification of daily life and going back a bit to enjoying much simpler things. When the penny dropped that 'sometimes doing nothing is doing something' then it all fell into place. I'm sure it can be done in an urban environment but wasn't something I could do properly until I moved away.
