when you get the pump out or at least the cover off

(pump won't suffer with 1 slightly bigger hole)

you will need to drill and put a case saver timesert or helicoil in for the pulled stud
i'd suggest helicoil as they use the smallest oversize for the hole they screw into
case savers would take the m8 thread out to m10 and i don't think you have space, timserts i think are a bit fatter than helicoil

you may need to pull the engine.

i used to stick mine on a crate and use a long trolley jack under the frame forks center to lift the car farward. i had nice smooth concrete so i could push the car on front wheels and jack i was stupid teenager this is not necesarily as safe way to do it

ramps and 2 jacks is probably safer
or yank it out onto a sand bag and lift the car


you can get the helicoil insert, a tool and the right odd sized drill bit in a package from ebay or engineering shop
you use the odd sized drill to basically take out most of the old thread
the helicoil sits on the install tool which kinda turns it into a tap to tap new thread
when the steel coil is wound in,(if you leave pump in it needs to be deep enough to be past the pump flange) you snap the install tool back and it breaks off the instalation tab leaving the coil in as a new threrad
once in you have a nice new steel thread cut into the alluminium alloy case it will take an original stud and will in theory be just as strong as it was orginally.

yes it should have been sorted at the time of rebuild or it has sufferd since

its never cheap but with engine cases in the £400 -£1000 mark these days 40-50 quid is worth it

Don't say engine out Dave. This engine has been in and out more times than a fiddler's elbow.
Fingers crossed I can repair it in place but I'm thinking not.
I know it's not a big deal to remove it but still.

We have a helicoil kit at work I'm going to borrow!

depends which stud....you may have access under the rear valence with exhsaust pulley and rear tins off...

I used to have mine in and out so often, I cut the back of the car off...

You could undo the wing bolts and the jointing plate I made up by the cut line, and lift the rear valance, bumper and both rear wings away as one bit.
You could only see a small line between the wing and the decklid when it was all bolted back.

Yeah that's a useful mod to do Dom. Makes life a bit easier!
