I got the second one done, it's a bit lumpy as the plastic/fibre whatever it is the panels are made from was breaking up badly. I tried to stabilise it with some epoxy and fill some of the surface imperfections, but the surface was crumbling around anywhere you tried to sand back so I just had to go for it.

I guess it's not something you'd ever look closely at once fitted.
The vinyl and glue are nice to work with though, I feel confident having a go at the centre console.

So having scraped off some of the underseal to weld in the floor patches, I found a load more loose and missing so stripped it all back as far as I could, cleaned things up and gave it a shot of converter and a couple of coats of enamel. I've only got room to work on one side at a time easily, so now to turn her around and do the other side....

Hmm, no great skill needed, just stubbornness/stupidity in spending god knows how many hours with debris,rust, underseal or paint getting in your eyes, nose, mouth, hair and down the back of your neck.....

Looks to be a dry state car? Both my cars were much the same, if yours had been on the road in the UK for 20 odd years it would be much harder work!

I believe she was a Carolina car originally, although I bought her from a guy in Indiana. I've had her over here for getting on 6 years now and she did her first 12 months at least, living outside in the street while I built the garage. She has her issues, but I really can't complain.

As a distraction from scraping, I've been looking at the steering wheel. It had one of those perforated wrap covers which was pretty minging. On removal the wheel was in terrible condition, so I filled some of the cracks and gave the spokes a blow over with some dark blue metallic to match the door cappings. I like the look of the wheel and horn ring, but prefer a thicker rim, so I've bound the rim with 5mm thick closed cell foam taped that over with pvc to retain it. I'll cover the whole thing with some more blue vinyl to finish.

So I am still cleaning up the other side underneath, honest, just taking my time and doing a few other jobs along the way. One being tidying up the centre console a bit. I've covered the tail section and it looks much better, now to do the main bit. I'd never realised until looking at some interior pictures recently, that the smooth band round the ribbed centre section of the main chrome panels is supposed to be painted in a sort of satin silver colour ! Looking closely there are traces of it left at the ends, so I guess I'll redo this, possibly even use a slightly blue tinted silver which might look nice. Really not sure the best way to handle the ribbed sections though, super hard to clean and the chrome is a bit pickled. I was vaguely considering spraying that section satin black, or also the silver/blue and then trying to wipe off or cut back the raised ribs, or maybe I'd be letting myself in for some sort of hell... Anyone got any advice , what have you guys done with these bits in the past ?
